How does the themes you are tracking develop into King Lear?
In the spectacular piece of
scripture by the most iconic English writers of all time, William Shakespeare,
the theme of power unravels to the tee. In fact, it exemplifies the how a theme
such as power actually plays a significant part in story plots and helped
writers like Shakespeare to use the body of characters to depict power as a
sensitive and useful concept in writing.
During the plot of Shakespeare’s The
History of King Lear or also known as The
Tragedy of King Lear, it perfectly depicts what a person in the Old English
times, or a King of the century would have looked like in the midst of royalty
and power. However passing the powers and perks of the throne was not so easy,
in fact William Shakespeare arouses the ugly truth of humans in the real world
and their premeditated notions, using the protagonist King Lear’s Daughters,
Goneril and Regan. Although King Lear
actually has three daughters, a turn of events takes place and highlights how
“power” can effect people in a given circumstance and possibly bring unforeseen
acts out of character.
Shakespeare writes of Cordelia, the youngest of the three
daughters, truthfully loving her father. Both daughters that previously spoke
before her said beautiful words and seemed almost cliché, of course a daughters
love for a father is beyond measure, however due to the royalties of the King’s
Kingdom, and the husbands of the two eldest daughters, Goneril states “Dearer
the eye-sight, space and liberty/beyond what can be valued rich or rare/54.55”
Which at the time where in an era of royalty, the most sought out, were the
riches of a kings kingdom. Cordelia tells her father “what shall Cordelia speak?
Love and be silent/61” saying an essence like what father? What do you want me
to say , you know I love you?
However due to the
blindfold and the effects of power, King Lear is blinded by the true love of
his youngest daughter and ends up leading to her deah
